It is a hand-held device which is good for taking readings of anything you may have at hand.

If you are reading many patches, as when creating a printer profile, you may want a more automated solution like the DTP41 strip-reading spectrophotometer or the GretagMacbeth Spectrolino / Spectroscan combination which combines a spectrophotometer with an automated x-y reading table.
