One of the many functions of the the Client program includes driving measurement instruments that can be used to measure reflective color targets.
The ISO 12647-7 control strip targets are built into the Client and are always available. For "one-off" measurements, select "Open..." from the target menu in the measurement window to browse to the location of the target defintion file. To import a target reference file so that it is always available from the target list, follow the instructions below:

Importing a custom target into the Client
This explains how to setup the Client to use a target that has been created in ColorPort, MeasureTool, i1Profiler, or Barbieri Chart Generator.
It is as easy as:
- Finding the target's reference file,
- Copying the reference file, and
- Pasting it into the correct folder where the Maxwell Client can use it.
In addition to the built-in targets that the Client reads, it can also read targets created by the more popular target creation software packages. Currently, the Client supports targets created by:
- ColorPort (.xml files),
- MeasureTool (.txt files)
- Barbieri Chart Generator (.zip files)
- Some targets made by i1Profiler (.txf and .pwxf)
- Exceptions:
- Some targets from ColorPort include extra columns of black patches (i1Pro). They are not supported at this time.
- i1Profiler targets made for the iSis must be saved in the .txf or .pwxf format in order to contain correct iSis chart information. The .txt format from i1Profiler does not contain adequate information for the iSis.

The Client now supports multi-page targets.
Finding the Reference
i1Profiler
Test Chart definition files in i1Profiler are saved out at the "Test Chart" creation stage. Clicking the Save button will open a dialog box which defaults to the i1Profiler-preferred locations, but allows the user to save anywhere on the computer. Choose the .txf format for use as a Maxwell target definition file.
"ProfileMaker CGATS" is another option that will work for all but iSis charts.
Alternatively, Maxwell will accept the .pwxf file that is created when a workflow is saved.
Barbieri (Chart Generator)
Maxwell supports targets made by Barbieri's Chart Generator software for use with the LFP and the Spectropad instruments.
Create a chart in the normal way using the Chart Generator software.
Chart Generator outputs a zipped file, and opens up a window identifying where it is in the folder structure. Copy that zipped file and paste it into the appropriate folder in the Client folder structure. Do not unzip the files, but leave it in its zipped form for use by the Maxwell Client.
Copy this Reference
Right-click the target definition file and choose "copy".
Paste it
The easiest way to get your reference file into the correct place for the Client to find it, is to:
- Open the Client,
- Go to Advanced > Open Target Reference Files
- Paste the reference file into the folders as applicable for your instrument.
Your target will now be visible the next time you click on a target drop down box when working with your printers or devices.
Measuring your target
Click on the Device
Click on the device that printed your target.
Click on the Measure button
Follow instructions
Follow the instructions given in the measurement window for:
- Selecting an instrument (if necessary)
- Selecting a target (if necessary)
- Calibrating the measurement device (if necessary)
Measure the target in the manner given.
While measuring, the colored patches are filled in with measured color as the reading proceeds. The upper left half of the measured patch represents the color aim, and the bottom right half represents the measured result. Red and yellow tick marks in the bottom right corner of patches are an indication that this patch measurement has exceeded a metric. In order for tick marks to appear:
- There must be a metric for Maximum delta E in the Color Reference for that track,
- There must be tolerances set for that Max dE metric, and
- The measurement has to result in a failure of the metric over the tolerance.
Red tick marks mean that this patch has failed the metric for Maximum delta E, beyond the upper failure level. Yellow tick marks show up for patches that exceed the upper "warning" level. It is possible that white tick marks may appear. If a tick mark is white this indicates that this patch was not included in the color aim for the track. The fact that it shows up in the measurement means that this patch IS included in the target definition file loaded by the Client app.

MemoryScan
For instruments requiring positioning (i1IO, LFP, FD-9) MemoryScan is available to make repetitive jobs easier.
With MemoryScan, a target's position on the scanning table can be memorized for rapid reuse. A separate memory is available for each target definition. Position a target on the scanning table in the same position as before - then 1-click measuring saves a lot of time. Depending on the instrument, heavy tape or markers might be helpful to ensure target position is repeatable. As an example, an i1 IO with MemoryScan makes a compelling proof verification tool.

Procedure
- Setting Memory
- Click Set Memory
- Position measurement head on target just as with a normal scan
- After the final corner, memory is set
- Memory Scanning
- Position all future targets on scanning table in the same position as before - heavy tape or markers are necessary to ensure target position is repeatable
- Ensure 'Memory Position' is selected
- Click Start
Target is finished
When the target is finished, it will:
- Save automatically and close if reading an Isis, IO, or FD-9 target, or
- Wait for you to click a "Save" button for an i1Pro, Spectrodens, or eXact target.
HELPFUL HINT: You can also save a measurement by clicking the instrument's button after the measurement is completed.
Optional: Click on the Maxwell Track blue link and verify that your measurement file was uploaded to Maxwell.

Multi-page targets
The Client now supports multi-page targets.
- Scanning with multi-page targets
- Load supported target type as normal
- Select single or multi-page view - the "Layout" button allows for single-page or multiple-page viewing
- Move between pages - use the < and > buttons to move forward or backward through the active target pages
- Scanning occurs into the currently active page
- Page completion markers
- As each page is completed, a Scan Complete marker will appear on the page and the Measure window will select the next un-scanned page.
- AutoScan and Barcodes in Maxwell Client
- Barcodes for AutoScan when used with the iSis scanner can now include page numbers. The MD03 barcode format can only be used with Maxwell Client v5.5 or later.
When scanning multi-page AutoScan targets, pages can be scanned in any order and selecting the correct page will happen automatically.
