This is a comparison between CMYK printing that has no color management and that which does. The top image shows only black (K) ink being printed in a color area that calls for a K-only black build. This is usually achieved if no ICC profiles are used during printing.

The bottom example shows a gray patch which was printed using roughly equal proportions of cyan, magenta and yellow (and black) ink which together make up the appearance of gray. This was printed using an ICC profile in the print path.

In order to print a proper CMYK profiling target, all color management must be disabled so that K-only patches are printed with K-only ink.
