CCD stands for Charge Coupled Device.
It is a light sensitive solid-state device that is used in digital cameras, most desktop scanners (and some higher-end ones), colorimeters, video cameras, and other devices. Their dynamic range is improving but is still not up to that of the PhotoMultiplier Tubes used in drum scanners.
